Presented by: Bill Johnson, Ph.D.
Psychotherapy with Black men is often organized around distress, pathology, and the effects of racism, with less attention to strengths, joy, self-compassion, and other sources of psychological well-being. This training introduces the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. Framework, a culturally responsive, strengths-based approach to psychotherapy with Black men that integrates attention to racial and gendered experiences with interventions designed to support psychological well-being.
Participants will examine how joy and self-compassion can be intentionally incorporated into clinical conceptualization and intervention rather than treated as secondary to symptom reduction. The training will use didactic instruction, clinical examples, and case-based application to demonstrate how components of the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. Framework can inform assessment, case conceptualization, and psychotherapy with Black male clients.
The training is directly relevant to doctoral-level psychologists because it translates culturally responsive theory and scholarship into clinical decision-making and intervention. Participants will consider how psychologists can recognize both structural and individual influences on Black men psychological experiences while developing treatment approaches that attend to distress without defining clients primarily through pathology or adversity.
