Five Things Clinicians Should Know About Men's Body Image & Eating Disorders

  • Society for the Psychology of Men and masculinities U.S.A. (map)

Presented by: Mary Pritchard, Ph.D.

The training will cover common myths and misconceptions about body image and eating disorders in men. Many doctoral level psychologists have little to no training in eating disorder-related content, including how men may present differently than women. This training will cover how men’s body image dissatisfaction presents and differs from women’s, including prevalence rates. We will also discuss the unexpected consequences men with body dissatisfaction may experience, and how those consequences differ from women. We will also cover prevalence rates of subclinical and clinical ED-related diagnoses in men. Finally, we will discuss issues with diagnosis and treatment in men and up and coming prevention efforts designed specifically for men’s body and eating issues.

Dr. Mary Pritchard received her Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Denver. She regularly teaches Psychology of Eating, Psychology of Health, Community Psychology, and Healthy Body, Healthy Mind. She specializes in body image and eating disorders and has authored over 50 publications on those topics. She is a certified Be Body Positive Facilitator and holds a certification in integrative nutrition. After over two decades of studying factors that influence the development of body dissatisfaction and eating disorders in collegiate men and women, her research now focuses on developing eating disorder prevention programs for college populations.
