<image:title>Division 51: Men & Masculinities Blog - 2025 Presidential Initiative: Fostering Connections - Second, some of my most valued professional collaborations and personal friendships have developed through my connections with members of Division 51. I aim to foster even more collaborations and friendships within our division. <image:title>Division 51: Men & Masculinities Blog - 2024 Presidential Initiative: Positive Psychology with Boys and Men - The second initiative is going to focus on our communication and enhancing connection within the division. For too long, our listserv has been home to intense dialog that leads folks to tune out. This year we will be piloting a Discord server, which will be a place where members are encouraged to talk WITH each other rather than AT each other. There will be channels for our student members, special interest groups, and task forces.</image:title>

<image:title>Division 51: Men & Masculinities Blog - Researcher of the Year Award - 2025 Winner: Dr. Silvia Sara Canetto</image:title>
<image:caption>Silvia Sara Canetto, Ph.D., is Professor of Psychology at Colorado State University, USA, with graduate degrees from Italy, Israel, and the USA. Canetto is a founding member of APA Division 51/SPSMM and SPSMM “Fellow” since 2021. Canetto is widely recognized for having started the field of men, masculinities and suicidality. Canetto’s most cited article “The gender paradox in suicide” was the first to name as a paradox men’s high mortality by suicide though men have low rates of nonfatal suicidal behavior. Canetto’s article “She died for love and he for glory: Gender myths of suicidal behavior” challenged dominant tropes of gender and suicidality, including the assumption that close relationships are irrelevant to male suicidality. Canetto tested this and other dominant assumptions about male suicide. For example, Canetto found empirical support for the hypothesis that male suicide-rates would be lower in countries where men do more family care work (“Caregiving as suicide prevention: An ecological 20-country study of men’s family carework, unemployment, and suicide”). Canetto’s scholarship also stands out for advancing intersectional analyses of men, masculinities and suicide, unassisted and assisted (e.g., “Suicide: Why are older men so vulnerable?”; and “White, male and vulnerable: A new perspective on male physician-assisted suicide”). Canetto has received national and international recognition for her innovative and impactful research, including the American Association of Suicidology’s Dublin Award.</image:caption>

<image:title>Division 51: Men & Masculinities Blog - Student of the Year Award - 2025 Winner: Callie Elizabeth Mims</image:title>
<image:caption>Callie is a fifth-year Ph.D. candidate in the University of South Alabama's Clinical and Counseling Psychology Doctoral Program. Her clinical and research interests focus on how gender roles and perceptions of masculinity/femininity impact individual well-being and experiences of mental illness, particularly issues of body image and disordered eating in men and boys. Currently, Callie is completing her dissertation, which explores how gender role threats impact men's and women's food choices, while working as a clinical fellow at Yale School of Medicine, specializing in treating trans and gender diverse youth as well as adults with opioid use disorder. Callie's strong interest in gender roles has heavily influenced both her clinical work and her research, and has contributed to her continued involvement in Division 51, including serving as Division 51's Digital Content Manager and Chair of Division 51's APA conference programming from 2022-2024. At this year's conference, she is presenting a symposium on men's disordered eating, and has recently begun work to represent the Division in Washington, D.C., through the Eating Disorder Coalition, advocating for policy reforms and increased awareness of men's body image concerns.</image:caption>

<image:title>Division 51: Men & Masculinities Blog - 2023 Presidential Initiatives: Growing Down as we Grow up - My vision for my 2023-2024 Presidential year is summed up in the phrase, “growing down as we grow up.” As a Division of APA, and as a group of people who work together as members and in leadership, D51 has come a long way since our initial founding in 1995. Since then, our membership, scholarship, and dedication to making D51 a welcoming professional home have allowed us to “grow up” by innovating and changing to meet the evolving needs of a society who has come to think about gender in ever more complex ways. I also see the need for us to “grow down” by rooting ourself in our traditions and celebrating the relationships that have made D51 such a great group of people and interest groups. Over the past year, we have updated our bylaws, revised our Mission Statement, migrated to a new website, and even slightly changed our Division’s name – all with the goal of keeping ourselves current and in touch with membership and society as-a-whole.</image:title>

<image:title>Division 51: Men & Masculinities Blog - 2023 Presidential Initiatives: Growing Down as we Grow up - Toward these ends, I’ve worked with D51’s Board of Directors, members, students, task forces, and special interest groups to at once garner more visibility outside the APA through marketing while also focusing on “inreach” projects aimed at helping to better connect all of our membership with each other. For example, a group of 300 members are engaging in the “ten calls” initiative in which they make calls to ten randomly-assigned members with the sole intent to connect - no sales pitch. In March 2023, we held the first Psychology of Men & Boys conference in San Diego, California - the first time in over eight years! We also hired the Division’s first-ever staff member, our Marketing & PR Specialist to help with website maintenance, social media, and managing an annual calendar of events and marketing campaigns. In the name of garnering more visibility for men’s mental health, several colleagues and I teamed up with Dennis Quaid’s production studio to film several video spots which will air on television and go out as focused email campaigns. Finally, we’re working to firm up some administrative processes like documentation and onboarding so that those in leadership positions can better get up and running!</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s been an honor serving D51 and look forward to the growth I see coming.</image:caption>

<image:title>Division 51: Men & Masculinities Blog - New Research Summary: Understanding In-law Relationships in Black Families - Despite the emerging research on in-law relationships and its impact on building healthy families, the majority of studies focus on women. Therefore, the evidence on male in-law relationships is scant. Even less is known about how Black families experience male in-law relationships. We sat down with Dr. Ericka Lewis from the University of Maryland to discuss her new research published in our flagship journal, Psychology of Men & Masculinities addressing in-law relationships in Black families (full cite below).</image:title>

Sex refers to the biological differences between males and females in terms of anatomy, hormones, and other biological characteristics. By contrast, gender refers to the social and cultural norms regarding what it means to be male or female in a given society (World Health Organization, 2022).</image:caption>

<image:title>Division 51: Men & Masculinities Blog - Men & Masculinities 101: Gender Role Conflict</image:title>
<image:caption>Gender role conflict (GRC) refers to the psychological circumstances in which socially prescribed gender roles contribute to personal restrictions, devaluation, or violation of either one’s own self or others around them (O’Neil et al., 1986). Whereas traditional masculine ideology (TMI) describes individuals’ beliefs about the rigid, stereotyped characteristics and behaviors that define what it means to be “a man,” GRC represents the direct consequence of rigid adherence to these beliefs. Said another way, if TMI is conceptualized as a rigid box in which masculine or manly traits are both rigidly defined and restricted, then GRC describes situations in which men are bound to that box, even when stepping out of the box would be more adaptive or beneficial (or moreover, when staying in the box would be harmful).</image:caption>

<image:title>Division 51: Men & Masculinities Blog - Men & Masculinities 101: The Gender Role Strain Paradigm</image:title>
<image:caption>The gender role strain paradigm, a central perspective in the field of men’s studies, was introduced by Joseph Pleck in his book, The Myth of Masculinity (1981), as an alternative to the gender role identity model. The gender role identity model dominated social psychology in years prior and was largely supportive of gender essentialism. Gender role strain, on the other hand, adopts the position that gender is socially constructed and indicates that cultural standards for gender norms – particularly masculinity as it pertains to men – have negative implications for individuals. The concept of gender role strain can be broken down into three distinct propositions which explain the link between such cultural standards and their potentially deleterious effects (Pleck, 1995).</image:caption>

Holding space is about shifting processes of care, addressing stereotypic masculinity norms that often create racially engendered barriers to help-seeking, and translating evidence into policy action. But, at its most basic level, holding space is about acknowledging the full range and depth of humanity among BMoC.</image:title>
